Health and Safety Policy — Commercial Waste Rickmansworth
Purpose: This document sets out the health and safety policy for our organisation providing commercial waste and rubbish collection services. It explains commitments to safe working practices, risk control for site-based and vehicle operations, and the responsibilities of staff and contractors engaged in commercial rubbish removal across our service area. The policy supports continual improvement and compliance with applicable occupational health and safety requirements while maintaining service reliability for businesses using our commercial waste services.Scope and objectives
Our policy covers all activities associated with business refuse collection, transfer, storage and disposal. It applies to employees, subcontractors, temporary workers and any third parties who may be affected by our operations. The objectives are to:- Prevent accidents and work-related ill health through risk assessment and control;
- Ensure safe handling, segregation and transportation of commercial waste materials;
- Provide training, supervision and resources required to maintain safe operations;
- Promote a safety-first culture across our rubbish collection teams.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities are clearly defined and communicated. Senior management retains ultimate responsibility for the policy and its implementation. Supervisors and team leaders have delegated duties to monitor compliance during day-to-day operations. All staff are required to follow safe systems of work, report hazards and cooperate with health and safety initiatives. Contractors must demonstrate competence and adhere to agreed safe working methods when delivering commercial waste services.Risk assessment and control measures are in place for common hazards associated with commercial waste removal, including manual handling, hazardous substances, sharps, traffic and vehicle operations, slips, trips and falls, and lone working. Assessments are recorded and reviewed regularly. Controls include mechanical aids for lifting, sealed and labelled containers for hazardous items, standard operating procedures for bin lifts and compaction, and clear protocols for contaminated or suspect waste.
Training and competence: We provide induction and ongoing training covering safe driving, manual handling, personal protective equipment (PPE), spill response, and specific controls for trade waste streams. Training records are maintained and refresher sessions scheduled where risks change or incidents indicate further instruction is needed. New methods, equipment and regulatory changes trigger tailored training updates to ensure staff remain competent.
Vehicles and plant are maintained under a documented inspection and servicing regime to ensure they remain safe for use in rubbish and waste collection operations. Vehicle checks are completed daily by operators, with defects reported and remedied promptly. Where mobile plant or lifting equipment is used as part of commercial waste services, statutory inspections and operator competence checks are enforced.
Incident reporting and investigation: All injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported immediately. We operate a no-blame reporting culture to encourage early notification and learning. Investigations identify root causes and lead to corrective actions that reduce recurrence. Records of incidents, investigations and remedial actions are retained to inform risk management and operational improvements.
Health surveillance and wellbeing: For roles with identified occupational health risks, appropriate health surveillance is available. We promote employee wellbeing by managing workload, providing access to occupational health services when necessary, and supporting mental health awareness within teams. Substance misuse policies and fitness-for-duty checks are implemented for safety-critical roles such as drivers and plant operators.
Emergency preparedness and spill response: Emergency procedures are in place for vehicle incidents, hazardous material incidents and fires. Spill kits are carried on vehicles that handle liquid waste or potentially polluting materials. Regular drills and scenario-based training ensure crews can respond quickly and mitigate environmental impact while protecting people on site and the public during commercial waste collection activities.
Consultation and communication: We engage staff and where relevant, client representatives in developing safe working practices. Safety briefings, toolbox talks and written communications ensure changes in operational risk are shared with those affected. We encourage staff to propose improvements and to raise concerns through established channels.
Performance monitoring and review: Key performance indicators for health and safety, such as incident rates, corrective action completion and training uptake, are reviewed at management meetings. The policy and its implementation are audited periodically to ensure effectiveness. Lessons learned from audits, inspections and incidents inform updates to procedures and training for our commercial rubbish collection services.
Compliance and continual improvement: We commit to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and best practice governing commercial waste handling and rubbish removal. This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are significant changes in operations, legislation or following significant incidents. Everyone associated with our commercial waste operations is expected to support and uphold this policy to safeguard colleagues, customers and the communities we serve.
